John Reuter: Digital Portfolios

I began working digitally in 1992. It was a slow process to get where I wanted to get to. Initially I combined my digital images with Polaroid output. These were relatively small files that I output to 4x5 transparency by way of a Polaroid film recorder and then "printed" to Polacolor 20x24 film by copying them. I would then make an Image Transfer onto watercolor paper and rework them in the manner that I had with my non-digital transfers from the 1980s. This began to change slowly as I become better at Photoshop and even as the program itself became more versatile. Eventually my digital composites contained such detailed transitions that the Image Transfer process was no longer able to successfully render them to my satisfaction. The desire to physically manipulate and paint on the final print was replaced with painting within Photoshop by virtue of layer combinations and in particular Layer Options Blending. (Now Layer Styles Blending) Most of my imagery is taken with a Hasselblad 500 CM with a 50 mm or 150 mm lens. I use a Polaroid Sprintscan 120 and an Epson 2450 for scanning. My output has ranged from Iris prints in the late 1990s to a Polaroid DryJet printer (eight color wax) to my current use of Epson printers ranging from a 2200 to 9600. My preferred media are watercolor paper and canvas.
